Energy advice

If you want to reduce your energy bills and help the planet, see our Hints and Tips pages for energy ideas, and our energy advice and grants page for links to energy advice websites and help with the cost of home insulation and energy efficiency.

Energy statistics

Local statistics on energy use are on a web site and can be seen by the public. The data comes from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, and gives gas and electricity use for some parishes, including Thornbury, and other data for South Gloucestershire. The data can be seen on The Converging World energy hub. The latest data is for 2010.

Community Energy project

We are trying to make a step change in Thornbury's net energy use. Our first step is the Energy-Smart Homes Trail. Our hope is that this will become a regular event, and cover the whole of South Gloucestershire. South Gloucestershire Council is our partner in this venture.

We have worked with Severn Wye Energy Agency (SWEA) to find households wanting free Green Deal energy assessments.

We are also working on improving the energy efficiency of The Chantry.

We held a workshop afternoon on these topics on Saturday 26 January. We generated a lot of ideas, including some short-term projects. The main conclusion was that we wanted to do something ambitious that would have a significant effect.

If you are interested in any of this, please email info@sustainablethornbury.org.

We expect the project to eventually include:-

Community energy projects elsewhere

There are community energy projects going on elsewhere in the country, and more starting up. More information on other local projects can be found at Bristol Energy Co-op, Bristol Energy Network, the Bath and West Community Energy Project, the Marshfield Energy Project, and the Gloucestershire Community Energy Co-op. More general information can be seen at the Energy Saving Trust, the Centre for Sustainable Energy, the government's Community Energy website  and Community Energy portal, and lots more.

See our Energy Resources page for links to useful resources for community energy projects.
